For this Friday Movie Night, we’re starting off with one of the most highly-regarded Mexican films of all time, The Exterminating Angel (1962). It is a darkly comic satire about a bunch of rich people who go to a dinner party and then find themselves unable to leave; supernatural forces proceed to torment them. The director is renowned surrealist auteur Luis Bunuel (Un Chien Andalou, The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie); this may be his magnum opus. After that is our obligatory God Damn America film for the week with Matewan (1987), a highly-acclaimed drama about a coal miners’ strike in 1920s West Virginia, and the attempts of the government and capitalists to break it. This is one of the classics of the worker-solidarity genre. Director is John Sayles, who is otherwise best-known for Lone Star (1996). Looks cool; let’s watch.
