I'm tired of living in my current city (KCMO) and really want to move somewhere else but I have no idea what sounds cool. I am lucky enough to be in a very in demand healthcare field that I can find a job in pretty much anywhere in the US sooooo what places have you enjoyed living in? Which ones suck and should be avoided?
It doesn't have to be a major city, I am more interested in what other people like and dislike and find important than tailored suggestions because I literally have no idea what I'm looking for. Plus hearing why someone loves some random small town in Montana that no one's heard of or something is interesting!
Bay area CA is completely inhospitable to human life making less than 140k a year
I grew up here as part of the racial underclass making the treat factory run for the rich white liberals and the amount of gentrification has been fucking completely insane
like literally the entire Hispanic community I grew up with is gone. There's still a lot but the area is very quickly becoming nothing but incredibly wealthy people, and it's super alienating and isolating talking to anyone because my parents grew up waiting tables for less than minimium wage and then it's like "oh yeah I came here from Colorado, my dad was Olympic gold medalist decathlete who graduated from Stanford Summa Cum Laude and owns 12 tech companies making 600k a year, how about you?" or
"oh yeah my family is old money from India, now go mow my lawn wet"
was also born in the bay....what you're saying is very accurate. it's hard to interact with the city now and it feels kinda painful. the industrial supremacy of tech also makes the city seem more lost and gentrified than places like new york. the only black people i see are homeless, yelling at people on the bart, drugged out, etc. its incredibly depressing. its also extra insulting though because the tech west coast people always have to do weird infantile justifications of their souless pillaging of the city, giving endless lip service to "a great work/life balance"; "i can work remotely while im hiking" ; "why live fast when you can just slow down" and other phrases that just reveal how disconnected they are and how much theyre masking that disconnected as some simple life philosophy accessible to everyone.
I cant really think of any other city that is as down bad as SF. (i assume places like seattle have been gutted to and also present that tech supremacy thing but i dont really know that much about seattle)

I did visit Florida once though; seeing a real Saturn V at the Kennedy Space Center was dope.

Chicago's also cool for being a major city with relatively cheap housing. The drivers here are fucking terrible though; I don't know how I haven't been killed in a crosswalk yet.
I live in Fresno. It's not as bad as people think, but I wouldn't recommend it in the summer if you prefer air that's not 115° and chewable. Pretty much have to own a car unfortunately.

But yeah lived my whole life here, tho most of it in the suburbs. Homelessness and gentrification are getting worse, but I'm definitely taking weather comfy enough that I can wear shorts outside 9 months of the year for granted
I have such a love hate relationship with LA haha. I grew up in Vegas and had a lot of friends in LA so have spent a lot of time there and I kinda just feel like I hate humans the entire time I'm there and I always feel relieved to leave but then I'm also always like fuck but there's so much cool stuff there. Are there any particular suburbs you would recommend?

Idk, I haven't been to like every part of the city so most of the places I find interesting are because I used to live there or had family there or something. West Hollywood and Santa Monica's pretty fun I guess?

If youre a well paid software dev, its great. Its got the best public transportation in the country, the food is unimaginable, and despite what people think the people here can be really nice. I have loads of pleasant interactions all the time. If you like art, movies, or music all of that is here in buckets, youll be entertained.
The bad is, well, the obvious, is that its expensive but more so than that its a police state. Cops, this weekend, threw a guy out of the subway because he asked them to wear a mask, which is of course minor compared to the executions theyve been known to give out. The police union is the strongest force in town, they can threaten the mayors daughter and get a "thank you, brave heroes" for it. Also the city feels lonely these days, but that could just be me, being me.
i still cant believe that bill deblasio didnt say anything about the police union leaking his daughter's mugshot / intake information....like talk about spineless. You'd at least think the soul sucking politcian people would look out for their family, whose security they presumably sold their soul for
I assumed he kept his mouth shut for just that reason, looking out for his family. Arresting the daughter on false pretenses was a very specific message that nobody is safe from the violence of the police.
yeah but deblasio has been pissing off the police union for years, he definitely bows down to them but, i'd at least think he wouldnt feel out of place receiving their vitrol. at the very least his daughter should have sued.
as someone who vaguely knew his daughter growing up (we're the same age and she was known as a huge stoner who would randomly add people in our age group who went to nyc public schools on social media under the name trippy hippy ), i kinda suspect that deblasio didnt go after the police union because him and his daughter as estranged as fuck, at least that was the vibe i got from her social media/ from some of our mutual friends.
although i do think her primary addy on her intake sheet listed gracie mansion so who knowwwsss!

I've got friends and family there. It's incredibly over hyped. People move there thinking it's outdoorsy, lost COL, good place to raise a family, etc, but in reality it's only good to move to if you're already solidly middle class. Extremely good old boy politics run by developers, the school system is joke and anyone with a penny to their name sends their kids to private schools if they can. Also the DSA chapter has like 6 active members. :sicko-wistful:

avoid unless you make decent money. The culture is really weird here. The architecture is cool, but all the new buildings are 'luxury' or else you're renting from a slum lord. a few racist food deserts. lots of L*bs. and weirdos from NH will come down and start shit. good healthcare options.
supposedly somerville has a decent amount of DSA activity, which i suppose is better than nothing, but Boston is just lib shit with more red tape and aisle reaching for no reason (well, money, but still).

I love it in the nice months but the winters are brutal. super cheap cost of living, and interesting things going on culturally for a city of its size. a lot of suburb nonsense, and the city itself is hella gentrified. people are midwestern nice, and really extreme about sports if thats something you care of. good healthcare options. possibly could have a socialist mayor come this november which is kinda cool.

This guy Bostons. Unless you or you and a partner are clearing six figures, you're gonna have roommate(s) to live in arms reach of Boston/reasonably T accessible. The other half of that, is depending on what you do, it can be very easy to clear six figures. Tech, science, healthcare are all good fields here (I've never lived in a place with a choice of world-class hospitals before).
Every place that was cool 10+ years ago kinda sucks and is either already gentrified or well on the way there.
Overall, I enjoy it here, but you definitely can't miss how much it honestly sucks. Though, I imagine most "well-meaning" lib cities have the same issues. Expensive, lacking in social services, crumbling infrastructure.
Cycling Infrastructure is growing and getting better.
yeah, I will most likely always have roommates unless I miraculously find another job, or move in with a partner into a 1 bedroom or something.
T is hit or miss depending on what part of town you're in.
I am glad that some of the cycling stuff is better, but the drivers are wack and I have to pay so much attention to avoid getting destroyed.
