Outside of indie games and some niche developers that is. Indie games have been blowing it out of the park for the past 10? years. I get the desire for big spectacle, but if you enjoy anything puzzle, rogue like/lite, arcade, 2D-platform or storytelling stuff, you literally never have to look at a triple A game ever again.
Big titles have been releasing zombie games for ages now, few are good the rest are incredibly forgettable (I'm looking at you, Back 4 Blood). Still, none are better than Project Zomboid, an indie game that will probably never be finished but still has the absolute best zombie experience you can get, true open world survival. The thing is that the g*ming industry engages in mass production of games, in true capitalistic fashion, so quality takes a deep dive as you're swarmed by games, the passion that went into them is long gone (talking about early 2000s), all games look the same now. On the Indie front however, games are done with passion as the industry has yet to corrupt them, devs dont feel alienated from their games because they want to work with them, the industry treats them so badly they don't feel engaged at all, they know they'll be fired as soon as their game hits release date. True alienation.
incredible how bad gaming has gotten honestly, every single thing I pick up just feels like new attempt to be fortnite?

90% of my Steam purchases the past ~2 or 3 years have been $20 indie games, and while there are plenty of duds, I've played some fantastic stuff.
