Oh god, just a quick glance at the website for this game. This is child pornography and the creator is an utter creep

Seeing things like this makes me feel like I should be making games. If some vile puke like this guy can do it, why can't I?

What kind of game would you want to make? Some genres have very accessible engines (RPGs notoriously so, as in this game), others not as much

I'm probably too ambitious for my own good. I'd want to make a dungeon crawler in simple 3D, like the early Shin Megami Tensei games or like King's Field. First person explore RPG. Like with blocky mazes and key puzzles and stuff. Those games are my jam. Something moody and wandery

I'd do a horror game if it weren't so saturated. I also don't believe in my ability to write interesting stories.

I can make music too and I've kinda done 3d modeling. I'm familiar with coding but haven't done it for years. I might be at a slight advantage because I know how to do audio design, mixing, music, etc.

That's cool! There's a youtube channel called Dungeon Chill that does a decent amount of coverage of indie takes on those grid-based dungeon crawlers. I know of him most via his coverage of Disillusion, which is an interesting such game (very "moody", as you put it), though I think it has a lot of wasted potential in its design and he overrates it a bit.

I love weird little turn-based RPGs, am an amateur musician, and have a bit of experience with helping devs with QA stuff, so I'd be happy to help you if you like. I think there are plugins in RPG maker for example that would let you do something like an early SMT (example), though there are surely also tutorials on how to make the same in Unity and such. If you can rein in scope creep, your goal seems very viable.

Oh Disillusion is one of my favorites! It's a cool little game with its own interesting style and I've been following the development on the sequel. The Desolate Hope is another RPG I really admire (despite the dev being a piece of shit)

You're really kind and now maybe I'll consider doing some of this stuff for real. I've only ever thought about it, never had any concrete plans or anything. Maybe this weekend I'll try and get Unity up and running and start going through some tutorials. When/if i have anything ready to show off I'll let you know

I've had Desolate Hope on the backlog for a long time because it looked neat but has the shadow of "Oh, it's by the FNAF guy" hanging over it, as you mention. I'll bump it up the list, given your praise of it.

You can do it! Unity tends to have comically extensive tutorials that you can lean really heavily on if you need to, and there's no shame in doing so. Based on what you said, your goal is along the lines of making something in your head real, not being a Big Deal Ingenuitive Game Coder(tm), so do what works the best for you reaching your goal as you define it. I look forward to whatever you may have to share heart-sickle
