What exactly does America have to do with trends of the 60s/70s fading out? Much of the appeal used to be to go against traditional values, a kind of freedom, partly rooted in the 68 movement. Those people got old, it is less of a revolutionary action, and with most people still practicing it being old people, it has become less appealing to young people. Most children also just don't want to be naked with their parents. But yeah, force America into everything and completely overestimate its influence.
Edit: I know that some countries got some US "inspiration" after WW2 to change their laws about nudity to be more restrictive. I don't know if there was pressure or not. But I don't think that US influence has been a driving factor in this. The fact that everyone can just take pictures of nude people and post them on the internet is probably a significantly bigger factor.
That kinda hippie stuff was always a small minority that got turned into a legend over time, most Boomers were always CHUDs
Yes, but a somewhat large minority. Enough for it to become a cultural phenomenon. I think in East Germany it was (and still is, but less) the most popular throughout Europe, with even school classes bathing nakedly together. This was mostly rooted in Catholics vs. Protestants, and many traditional values were initially broken by the Nazis, which makes this whole argument of problematic US influence even weirder.
And who is responsible for the Wild West nature Of the internet? Imagine if the internet was dominated by common sense law and censorship like in China. Things would be much better.
Are you seriously advocating against net neutrality and pro-censorship of the internet? lol
Imagine being so obsessed with China that you want to ban the one good thing we have, and the best way of organising. chapo.chat would likely get banned in China.

Fake news. Bigotry. Trolling. Lack of privacy.
Things like this are permitted because America takes a completely hands off approach to the internet.
Imagine if Internet was treated the way real life is. With bigots banned on site. Where fake news isn’t so easily spread because they get flagged. It would be a much better society. China would do that. Heck we don’t even need them. An EU internet would be much better than an American one.
Ah, yes, we should have a government authority that controls which information is allowed to be posted online! What a great idea. Are you also suggesting the ban of anonymity on the internet and basically forbidding encryption? Societal issues aren't best tackled by... hiding them. One could suggest better education and solving real problems that drive people into weird ideologies, providing alternatives to capitalism or at least current forms of it.
Why don't you start and use your real name on this website?
I wish they did.

Are you really blaming "lack of privacy" on an ABSENCE of government involvement? What the fuck am I reading
Privacy isn't necessarily violated exclusively by the state, and can be protected in some instances by state involvement. This can be seen in something like the "right to be forgotten" in the EU, where the EU has gone out of their way to ensure that private digital information that social media companies hold can be scrubbed at the request of a person.
In the United States, such an approach is unlikely since the state has a large interest in leveraging surveillance through social media.
That is true. I should have clarified that I was thinking specifically of the US government and their lust for surveillance (and eagerness to collaborate with corporations on this front.)
So, perhaps apologize for being a little too vicious with the person wanting a more EU-like internet?
The initial argument here was:
So while the next comment does mention the EU, I can perhaps be forgiven for thinking this was a call to place more sweeping censorship tools in the hands of the US government, and not only to implement very specific EU policies.
Fair.
I want to tell you about my mom. I cried yesterday after she yelled at me. She then started praying over me, and rebuked various demons and evil spirits. She prayed for over an hour. She prayed to ward away all moon demons, evil desert foxes, evil dragons, ancient ancestral curses, and other things. Lots of other things. She went through a huge list of all evil spirits to ward off. She went through rebuking the evil spirits in various parts of my body. She warded off the demons in my hands. She exorcised the demons in my legs. She told the demons in my blood to leave in the name of Jesus. She told the demons in my cat to leave in the name of Jesus. And moon demons.
I told you this to remind you to drink water, since she has made sure there are no more demons there either.
I mean, would you trust the government/courts of your country to censor internet? Here in Russia they use this power to censor LGBT sites and what not.
No. But I trust corporations even less.
