Philosophically, its just a reinvention of heaven and hell, but with a mathematical basis. Work like hell for us, the interpreters of this new god, who are the only ones smart enough to build it. I thought this smelled like LessWrong/Yudkowsky's brand of bullshit.
- the utility isn't infinite, merely a large quantity.
- infinity * 0 is some positive number, so the extreme case with actually infinite utility yield still fails to multiply to an infinite quantity - this matters, because
- you have to discount future utility yields against their likelihood of actually occurring. so
- large positive utility in the present must still be weighed against this possible future yield. therefore, I can reduce their argument to the basic notion that we must plan for the continuation of the species.
and this is just working within their framework. this is undergrad college shit that would lose you marks for being too cute but failing to reason it out correctly. I remain unimpressed with these nerds.
oh and for fun, you can show the just-so nature of their argument by noting that there's a low but present probability that the being who invents their perfect simulation descends from the people they'd write off for death - it's no less likely than that they descend from the supposedly more intelligent people writing this bullshit since over generations, traits tend to regress to the population mean and extreme traits can pop up anywhere. so extremely get fucked you racist, piece of shit nerds.
even very smart people can get caught up in fascist bullshit because they arranged an invalid or unsound argument that they believe anyway because it validates their ideology. in this case, though, I've never been particularly expressed with the LessWrong crowd - they're like techbros but even less productive because at least the former actually try to build things. instead, they're just constantly high on their own farts, speculating about math, science, and philosophy instead of like, y'know, actually doing the work and publishing papers.
