Paid leave is just the latest party priority Democrats have removed from the bill because of opposition from their centrist members. Democrats have let go of free community college, a program aimed at pushing utilities to generate more clean energy and a series of top marginal-tax-rate increases in recent days.

You’d think their willingness to drop these proposals demonstrates how little they were attached to them and could then be used to show a lot of people where the real problem is.

Manchin and Senema just exist to be a backstop while the Dems slough off the parts of their platforms they used to get elected

They do. However note that under a more competent, more comfortable, more confidently neolib administration the Democrats used to pass the vetoing buck around among a group of senators and congressmen that was so big none of them even lost their liberal/progressive bona fides over that. Matt Taibbi wrote pretty well about that before he got Twitter brain rot. Now they can't seem to do that competently anymore, leaning heavily on those two senators, but if you were to replace S&M with Berniecrats some moderate Dem would simply morph into Manchin like a shapeshifter.

Lmao, so the 'groundbreaking' 3.5 trillion over 10 years is already down to 1.75 huh

They're just going to keep spinning their wheels on this until they lose the Senate and go "oh well, we tried"

I feel like that “over 10 years” part really isn’t stressed enough. This was NEVER a $3.5T bill - At it’s highest this was a $350B bill, AKA “not even half of what we spend on murdering brown people every year”

Well it's much easier to cut a $3.5 trillion spending package than it is to cut down on a Bill that is only about 1.5 percent of GDP

I am pretty sure all that is left in their proposal is tax breaks for the rich and coal companies that Manchin negotiated in back when the proposal was 6 trillion.

    :data-laughing:

If any of the Dem leadership could express even a drop of emotion about this, that would be great.
