Is it entertaining for solo play or is all the good content pretty much restricted to parties/guilds/etc.?
Leveling takes a pretty long time, and you'd be doing most of that solo. There's a massive amount of content built up over the years, you can actually walk from Frodo's house to Mordor now.
Apparently they're doing a promotion with a bunch of the expansions for free? So you would be able to play the story for free.
I played it a bajillion years ago shortly before it became free to play. I had no idea it was still even running.

I played the game a long time ago but if it still works the same, you can play as the evil factions in a limited sense - only PvP, limited to the PvP zone.
Yeah this is how it works, refered to as playing "creep mode". You basically hunt freeps ("free peoples") in certain areas. It's kinda dead and has been for a while but is about to get a major overhaul apparently
I always try to get back into it and get filtered by how old school it is. It's fun and the combat is better than most MMOs but fuck, the leveling is rough. I think my main left off in the eternal fields that are Rohan.
My dad was pretty hardcore for a while though, he got multiple characters to the level cap lolI like how the mods deleted every post except this one because it's so fucking funny.
