I was pretty proud of the direction South Africa was going in under Mandela and early Mbeki before Mbeki and Zuma started the austerity politics, neoliberalism and corruption. But I was also very young back then, a literal kid. But looking back there was a lot to be proud of, and I still have hope for a socialist South Africa with further decolonization, even if that seems very unrealistic right now.

I'm still very proud of our new constitution, it's really good. One of the first counties to legalise gay marriage and LGBTQIA+ rights, like 10 years before most western "democracies". If only it was properly enforced and followed.

Any country where being patriotic doesn't mean supporting imperialism, I guess. Being proud of my country was pretty nice back when I was a lib, and actually internalizing how fucked my country was kinda messed me up for a while.

As much as I hate patriotism here, I always feel a little bit of joy in pointing out all the ways patriots break the flag code... I'm not sure why

because it reveals how hypocritical they are, they don't even follow their stupid made-up rules about flag handling. Kapernick couldn't kneel before the flag, which is a respectful pose allowed by flag code, but they routinely stretch out the flag at sports games in flagrant violation of flag code. It's all of racism in miniature; a result which only applies to non-european people, and is harshly enforced despite being utter nonsense.

The United Federation of Planets is probably just about the only answer. Everywhere on earth is either too discriminatory towards intersex people (wild that there is no specific term for bigotry against intersex people :thonk: ), racist, homophobic, ableist, antisemitic, or some combination thereof for me to exist without being actively inconvenienced on a daily basis. Not to mention throwing capitalist oppression into the mix.

I think if I only had to deal with just capitalism being shit on a daily basis it would be so much easier, but goddamn, it's just all at once all the time.

I suppose that works. It's really just sexism in general, but that kind of gets ignored because dyadic society kinda tends to forget we exist :shrug-outta-hecks:
