I love the idea of hundreds of small civilizations whose only record of existing is like going to war with Rome/Byzantine Empire or something having an accurate tally of all trades that occur domestically.
That's also the end of the dark ages (the dark ages are not called the dark ages because they were bad, but because there was a lack of sources and records from then.)
