I love the idea of hundreds of small civilizations whose only record of existing is like going to war with Rome/Byzantine Empire or something having an accurate tally of all trades that occur domestically.

I’d bet that a majority of this money comes from financial trickery: trading stocks and tokens and loans just as a means of multiplying money without labor.

That’s the story of this line: through debt based economic systems, the rich learned that they could multiply their money in a way that poor people could never. Really helped create a kinder, gentler subjugation.

How would you assign gdp from taking 2000 tons of gold from south america? :thonk:

    Ah, it’s not per capita

GDP is when you exchange American blood money for African blood money. And the faster that trade occurs, the more GDP you get.

That's a big problem we have in modern western societies, except maybe collapsing ones like the US.

"Eh, it's fine. Why would we need socialism when things will be good forever?"

Ah yes, exponential growth on a finite planet is a totally stable foundation to base one's politics on.

It’s not even per capita so this is basically just a population graph. Also X-axis is completely useless to interpret meaningfully here anyway.

1500 is the start point of good growth so this guy is just really enthusiastic about the Spanish enslaving indigenous Americans to mine silver.

He's telling on himself because as you said, what made that "hockey stick" shape was "slavery", end of.

That's also the end of the dark ages (the dark ages are not called the dark ages because they were bad, but because there was a lack of sources and records from then.)

Gonna be funny when in like a few hundred years we meet a space empire and it goes about as well for us as it did for the Gauls

In a couple hundred years, it'll be more like stumbling upon the Pueblo Indians.

Just a bunch of empty houses.
