Battle for China's Past is not necessarily a book about 20th century China, but I highly recommend it because it takes down June Chang's Wild Swans, which is a bourgeois fantasy about the horrors of the Cultural Revolution. It's amazing how ridiculous Gao makes Chang look and then see respected China experts in academia say Swans is the must read book on the CR.
