Besides what I already commented, people just block whatever they don't want to believe. They just can convince themselves of anything no matter how deranged. Anything against that already-taken-descition is just fuel for them to NOT change their mind, else they would feel dumb and everyone knows that "anything that makes me feel bad is wrong".
