Imperial passport of Kublai Khan “I am the emissary of the Khan. If you defy me, you die.” (This is one of two known passports).
—————————————————————
A paiza or paizi or gerege (Middle Mongolian: Гэрэгэ, Mongolian: Пайз, Persian: پایزه pāiza, Chinese: 牌子 páizi) was a tablet carried by Mongol officials and envoys to signify certain privileges and authority. They enabled Mongol nobles and officials to demand goods and services from civilian populations.
I certainly wouldn't. You don't get to have passports like that by making empty threats.
I was hoping it was Mongolian throat singing metal.
spoiler
It was.
A not dissimilar thing is actually written on the inside of British passports
Had a go with Age of Empires 4, having found the Mongols the most fun I mastered them to some degree and they had these neat educational videos about them, including the dope ass courier system called the Yam that used a similar medallion that enabled couriers to acquire food and horses at stations to ensure smooth administration.
From what I understand of the Mongols this happened exactly once, and in retaliation the Khan killed the entire city. Men, women, and children. No one ever did it again.

This is the incident I was thinking off. They killed a Mongol trade caravan and some diplomats and... uhm... things went very badly for them.
I want you to witness the fate of the town of
NiptonSamarkand, to memorize every detail.
The Mongols were such dickheads that honestly I can't help but fuck with dumb ahistorical shit like Ghost of Tsushima (which absolutely sucks off the also-terrible samurai) just for letting me flay those fuckers with a katana.
To be fair, the Khan wanted to be his friend and he murdered his diplomats (who were likely members of the Khan's family) and dishonoured the survivors. I'd be a bit upset too.
Not, you know, enough to murder a city (wth Khan?!) but I'd definitely want the Shah's head on a pike, while he's still alive.
that happened once. Then their empire was conquered and their cities burned in one of the bloodiest wars in history
it's great that the president's understanding of the context and of the translation are both wrong...
A comment is...
Actually, Civis Romanus simply means "citizen of Rome." "I am a Roman citizen" is Civis Romanus sum.
And another commenter says...
This phrase was first popularized by Cicero, who claimed a man moments from death at the hands of a Roman Governor of Sicily said "Civis Romanus Sum" in a vain attempt to spare himself from an unlawful end. It's kinda funny just how wrong this scene botches the reference. Much less the greater point, which was just as wrong.
I'm so mad that show can botch pretty much everything and everyone still thinks it's an "intelligent" show because the president makes historical references.

In fairness, it's pretty good for a coke addict who refuses to do any research or listen to any advice from the other writers.
I literally just watched the Doctor Who episode with Kublai Khan. Curious.
"Sorry, can't make head nor tail of those meaningless squiggles. Off with his head."
