squid game is my new ur-example for leftists reaching completely different conclusions about media (haven't watched parasite yet)

did we all forget that watching poor people compete for money is the most popular kind of reality TV? 90% of people watching squid game were seeing 'jeopardy with higher stakes' and the rest as windowdressing or interpersonal intrigue.

it literally is too subtle and focused on a dramatic setpiece made possible by capitalism (and like a metaphor for it) not capitalism itself---which is what im saying. we can't mince words and do fancy metaphors if we really want a message.

many artists think (and have been lead to believe in capitalist nations) they're above it though

Remember how Soylent Green came out fifty years ago and said "The soil and oceans are being harvested unsustainably and eventually will fail to sustain life, leading to the extermination of human life on this planet?"

If people remember it at all it's to jokingly yell "Soylent Green is people!" or name techbro products after Soylent Green.

(Yes I know it has really bad malthusianism but give it some credit it was like 1970ish. Basically the stone age.)

And a lot of the doomsayers people don't take seriously because they are terrible orators, they are assholes, they are smug and have a sense of superiority, they get it wrong too much. You want people to believe in covid maybe the government shouldn't lie to people, or a better idea, why don't we just censor all information so there can't be dissent! GENIUS!
