There's no absolute rule to this. Migrants can maintain genuine connections to culture and/or the home country across an indefinite number of generations. If you're family's been in the US for 150 years but you speak the old language and/or maintain contact with the old country, you have every right to claim that heritage. Ethnic enclaves are real and valid and assimilation is not a law of nature.
