I had the dumbest argument with a friend recently that started like this:
"What's up with Birdo?"
"The Mario game character?"
"Yeah."
"They're transgender."
"What seriously? This game is for kids."
"And? What is your point?"
Insert heated argument that still remains unresolved.
I had a situation just like this a while ago with a nominally liberal coworker. She had misinterpreted a news article and thought it was saying Disney was going to start putting more trans and gay characters into their films (that's not what it said but whatev). She goes off and says children's entertainment shouldn't display that kind of thing, since it encourages confusion in kids.
I replied that there are right now, currently, trans and gay people who have children. Or the kids have a relative, sibling, friend, whatever. It's not just something that's on a screen. LGBTQ people are real and can't simply be hidden away. She was taken aback for a second but instead let the pretense drop and just said "They shouldn't have children" so that kind of ended it lol.

For the life of me I've just given up with arguing, my follow up to that would of been "I'll fucking kill you."
I wish I could be more openly disgusted with the amount of heinous bigotry at my workplace. Saying anything chud-like or racist where I live is perfectly normal and I'd probably get fired for creating a hostile workplace if I even thought about calling anyone out on it.

The secret to understanding this is understanding the ingroup and The Other. If you're in liberals' ingroup, obviously you're protected from homophobic slurs. But if you're not - it's open season on you. They can say whatever they like, and there is no punishment. For many, this is how they blow off steam from secretly holding in their homophobia all the time.
Once you notice this, you can't stop noticing it everywhere.
