i’m gonna put a bullet in anything darker than a grocery bag

I was skeptical, so I looked it up. Here's an interview on it.

      And here's an article:

Ultimately, Bourgeois conceded that he and other Algiers Point residents formed a vigilante neighborhood patrol committed to shooting any outsiders they encountered because they said “n***ers” were “tearing up” New Orleans...

Bourgeois — who had also armed his teenage son with a pistol — crowed that he “got one” and promised to “kill that n***er” if he had survived the shotgun blasts. He assured a neighbor that he would shoot anything “coming up this street darker than a brown paper bag” and displayed a bloodied baseball cap that fell from Herrington’s head as if it were a trophy.

You read that right: his name was Ronald Bourgeois. He wasn't even charged with anything until 2010, and it looks like he spent most of the rest of his life out on bail. "Why would they burn down a courthouse?"

Shit, this guy pretty much got away with it.

A white man who admitted shooting three black men in a racist attack in Algiers shortly after Hurricane Katrina died Feb. 19, less than a week after he was sentenced to spend 10 years in federal prison, officials said Wednesday...

In 2014, U.S. District Judge Mary Ann Vial Lemmon ruled that Bourgeois would not be able to withstand the rigors of a trial. However, three years later, a Tulane University psychiatrist determined that Bourgeois — out on bail at the time — had regained the ability to go through a trial.

From what I can tell, the time line is: run a fascist death squad in 2005, not be charged with anything until 2010, maybe locked up until 2014 (but likely out on bail), for sure out on bail from about 2014-2017, go to trial sometime in 2018 and die before you actually go to prison in early 2019.

If you can murder (at least) three people and spend what looks like a majority of your days outside of custody, that's a pretty sweet deal all told.

There's a European documentary that has all those guys that just executed literal children left and right by the evacuation point with all of them living happy lives and either openly admitting or heavily alluding to their involvement.
