In the books, the covenant use a much wider variety of shipborne weapons, and the ones they glass planets with are essentially specialized tools for the purpose of flooding the target planet with hot plasma.
Isn't "glassing" originally from nukes turning sand to glass? I never really got why what the Covenant does was called that.
