Honestly this is just the correct political move from their perspective. Debates are democratic home turf. Trump just proved they can dip out of them and not face any consequences.

I caught a NPR story during their 1/6 coverage about how young people feel about the state of our "democracy". Even the lib kids were pretty pessimistic and pretty much thought it was a sham and only getting worse
Sortition is the only way forward for this country. Elections are bad and need to end.
Unless the bourgeoisie are minecrafted or re-educated, sortition would be a fancy way of saying “rigging a random game so that we win”
Rigged sortition is much more obvious than rigged elections.

GOP just means the party as a whole, it stands for "Grand Old Party."
