I’m making my way through the “not anime anime” (bebop, champloo , Ghibli films, my hero academia) and I watched a crap ton of clips of Jojo on YouTube and know the memes. But like anything more then that? Nah, I’ve tried oh believe me I’ve tried. But nothing ever stuck and now I have zero interest.

I’ll keep Space Dandy as the weirdest anime I’ve ever seen. At least it doesn’t take itself too seriously. And when it does it’s hillarious

Edit: ok I wrote all that then remembered I watched all of Beastars as and was sucked in so idk maybe I’m a big liar.

Yeah it seems like the deeper you get into anime the more the creators consciousness kind of collapses onto itself and it's like this self-feeding cultural context that only exists as a reflection of a reflection of a reflection of some obscure and pedophilic 1980's shit

      I liked cowboy bebop

That was more or less my thought process as Kill la Kill was described to me.

Bebop is good. I’m enjoying Bebop.

Try Haikyu. It's a show about volleyball that feels like it has less of the weird anime baggage

Yes. The sports are just a vehicle for the relationships and the character growth

I will warn you, it doesn't seem super strong at first, a lot of what's good about it comes from the character growth, and an unfortunate side effect of that is that a lot of the characters start off not being great. Also, there's a few standard anime tropes that the show seems to be playing straight at first, but they're actually not.

But hey, even at its worst, there's no weird horny nonsense, so that's pretty great.

I barely consider Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken an anime, it's the only one I can tolerate watching that isn't, like old Lupin III or Ghibli.
