Dr. Walter Kendall Myers (not to be confused with noted African American children's author Walter Dean Myers) and his wife Gwendolyn Myers were convicted of espionage against the United States in 2010.
Walter was born into privilege: a direct descendant of Alexander Graham Bell, he also counted Howard Taft among his ancestors. He attended a prestigious private preparatory school, followed by degrees from Brown and Johns Hopkins.
Myers was also deeply flawed. In 1977, he killed a 16 year old pedestrian, Susan Slattery, and severely injured two others, in a drunk driving accident. Because of his privilege, he largely escaped justice.
He also held some bizarre and difficult to understand views about European History and Geopolitics. He was at one point accused of antisemitism with respect to one of his numerous papers, but, to be frank, the paper itself was sufficiently convoluted and unusual as to make any such prejudices uncertain. (The crux of the paper in question was a premise that England and Germany would have made for natural allies in the lead up to World War 2. The confusion is whether this was a condemnation of England or some sort of backhanded praise for Germany.)
However, it is the second half of his life that makes him notable and the topic of our humble megathread.
For approximately 30 years, Walter, with assistance from Gwendolyn, was one of the most prolific spies operating for Cuba in the United States. He is notable both for quantity of information passed, as well as his motives. To the bafflement of most observers and media publications covering his arrest and conviction, the Myers family enjoyed absolutely no benefit--financial or otherwise--from their espionage activities. This is extremely unusual in the world of espionage. Indeed, they undertook tremendous risk and sacrifice for no apparent reason other than they were, to quote numerous publications, "true believers in the Cuban Government, socialism, and the Cuban Revolution." They also are understood to have a deep resentment of the United States.
"I have become so bitter these past few months. Watching the evening news is a radicalizing experience," Myers wrote in his diary, referring to what he described as greedy U.S. oil companies, inadequate health care and "the utter complacency of the oppressed" in America.
The Myers couple had great admiration for Fidel Castro, in particular, describing him as one of history's great leaders. Walter Myers had very high levels of security clearance in his role at the US State Department, and used this role to gather information and secretly pass it to Cuba. It is possible that his efforts may have contributed to the thwarting of several of the "cartoonish" assassination plots against Castro.
In the wake of the revelations about the Myers couple following their arrest, Castro was quoted as saying, "I can't help but admire their disinterested and courageous conduct on behalf of Cuba. Those who in one form or another have helped to protect the Cuban people from the terrorist plans and assassination plots organized by various U.S. administrations have done so at the initiative of their own conscience and are deserving, in my judgment, of all the honors in the world." The former Cuban leader declined to say whether the Myers couple really had passed secrets to the Cuban government, but added that they deserved praise if they did.
Walter and Gwendolyn were convicted of espionage in 2010, at the ages of 72 and 71, respectively. Gwendolyn was sentenced to a prison term of 6-7 years. Walter, however, was sentenced to life imprisonment, and is currently held at the infamous supermax prison ADX Florence, in brutal conditions, alongside such notable inmates as "El Chapo".

Question for the day:
What is your favorite kind of apple?
Like usual have fun :soviet-heart: and remember to dm @Wmill the answer. Really. I want everyone reading this to dm Wmill with your favorite kind of apple.
When I was in la last week, I performed for some extremely bourgeois people who lived in the hills of Malibu and at one point a woman there was talking about how she was “attacked” by a homeless person.
They preceded to talk about them like they were pest animals or something. One said he was on the local watch committee for the area and was complaining about how hard it’s been to get the cops to get rid of them
Californians normally: Whoa, like peace and love dude, surfs up, tubular!
Californians thinking about the homeless: And we see here the natural state of the poor: squalor, deceit, lies, too sick for their own good. The only solution is a final one.
I mean to be fair to the folks in my example, the Asian community in NYC has been consistently harassed and attacked, and in the last two weeks alone there have been two murders of Asian women by homeless folks, so at least the "attacks" in this case are real. Is it even possible to be homeless in Malibu?!
i imagine it was someone on the edge by santa monica or something lol.
Yeah I know that homeless attacks are a thing, i somewhat doubt the veracity of it in this case i'm talking about tho, i got the sense that "attack" to her meant like he asked her for food or something lol. I wasn't implying noones ever been attacked legitimately by a homeless person before or anything
I guess what I left out there is that obviously the solution to it, even if it was an attack, is clearly it's because people are either mentally ill or in some extremely desperate situations and addressing that instead of just using the police to shepherd them out into a neighboring community is probably a better solution lol
Oh for sure, yeah a lot of the times "harassment" and "attack" is "the ugly poor looked at me and expected I look back at them as if they were a person and acknowledge their existence!" Nothing makes me feel more like our society is going to hell than a homeless guy begging on the train and nobody save for me and some clearly poor working class folks even looks at them and acknowledges their personhood.
yeah exactly. that was what infuriated me. I mean they could have been talking about coyotes coming in and digging in trash cans and it wouldn't have felt any different. Just the most extremely dehumanizing way to discuss a person in about the worst situation they could find themselves in.
The only proof you need to display the inherent fascist tendencies of the American mind is to bring up homeless folk. 100% agree that they don't see homeless people as "people" at all but a vermin like rats that need to be purged from our communities. I wonder what that reminds me of... :curious-marx:
