    The only thing the tech industry learned about academia was how to treat workers like slaves by making them think they are special.

    Grad student conditions were among the worse in the CS departments on most campuses and that translated into long hours with shitty rewards in the tech industry as it developed from academic labs. (edited: to clarify the early computer days were lots of moving paper around and laborious hand checking for mechanical/electrical failures in equipment.)

      I am not sure which campuses this is the case in but ime CS is one of the more privileged departments (you can code from home, greater funding, etc etc). Departments with lab work (Chem, Phys, Bio) is where I have heard the most horror stories (work at the lab 12 hrs per day).

        All of STEM has gnarly worker conditions for grad students.

        Glad to see more grad student unions coming online.
