The Harley Quinn animated show is actually pretty based. Definitely worth the watch.

Oh it's entirely the only good modern capeshit imo!! And not just because it has good takes about cops (beyond this, some of the characters live in an apartment building whose street number is a clearly visible 1312, and all of the cops are incompetent assholes except for The One Good Cop(tm) who gets suspended/fired and/or quits).

It's also the only capeshit I know of that is narratively interesting and original, featuring nonlinear storytelling, an unreliable narrator, and occasional 4th-wall breaks. (Capeshit fans hated all of this, because non-formulaic capeshit demands too much critical thinking from them I guess?)

Its also the only capeshit that I know of that isn't male gaze-y — you can actually tell it was directed by a woman, especially if you compare the camerawork from its scenes to scenes from Suicide Squad, but also in the way that scenes like

      spoiler/cw misogyny, assault

the one where the villain is humiliating a woman in his club by making her stand on a table and making her boyfriend cut her dress off of her while she sobs. The way the scene is shot, we mostly get the terror on her face and other camera angles that put us in her position and sympathize with her, rather than observing or getting actual shots of her standing there nude with her dress in tatters like I guarantee you'd see if this was a scene in any other capeshit.

It's also really fun how it picks apart some of the tropes from other capeshit and previous movies featuring Harley Quinn — things like commenting derisively on some skimpy costume pieces from Suicide Squad.

Really, as far as capeshit goes, it's 10/10 — campy, fun, queer, doesn't take itself too seriously, decent politics, actually treats women like people.

Edit: can't believe I forgot to mention that the stunt coordinators worked on John Wick, so all the action scenes are legitimately great

The choreo was really good. Totally over the top but in a way that looked fluid and at least possible, in the way you would want a "super" person to be.

Yeah! IMO a big part of that was that the choreographers really focused on having Harley and the other women fight dudes much bigger than them in a way that would actually work (like relying on speed, agility, and gravity — using their opponents' size against them) which gave them way more opportunities to be creative versus your generic "cgi of a super strong dude punches other dude through a building" fight choreo

I turned it off during the scene where they were torturing some random family. I hate it when movies decide to just have some casual rape or torture to break up the silliness and... I actually don't know why the fuck they do that. They could just not.
