Cuz history isn’t really taught as history (e.g., material analyses and ideological critiques), it’s taught in the basic spirit of pop fiction anyway.
Fortunately, at my uni at least, most incoming college-age students actually do see it as cringe or at least super problematic now, compared to the euphoria over it in 2015/2016.

because americans have very little exposure to the world beyond television and movies. the saddest part is, it's not really their fault - education is just somewhere to send the kids while you're at work, there's no real expectation for them to come away with a more complete understanding of our world.
I remember how a couple of months ago someone here posted scans from a DPRK history textbook and they used historical materialism to analyze everything. Meanwhile in America, they're teaching kids that the Civil War wasn't actually about slavery, and that capitalism is freedom :agony:
