I know I'm catching up on about a decade-and-a-half's worth of them, but maybe your guys could give me a place to start.
I'm just psyched I finally get to play Plants Vs. Zombies 2 now since the bastards never ported it. :greensicko:
If it's an android consider getting fdroid https://f-droid.org/ from there you can get a n64 emulator or a general emulator and some roms and boom suddenly you can play games without micro transactions.
consider not frying your brain with games, i definitely wish i hadn't. you have a golden opportunity to never drink from the cursed fountain.
:gamer-gulag:
while mobile, desktop and console games all suck your soul, mobile games are especially nefarious. they are designed to be playable at any moment of the day. you are never forced by the mechanics of the human body, chairs, TVs, desks, beds, bathrooms, to take a break
I mean this srsly: Thank you for your concern, and I'll keep that in mind. I'm already aware/wary of free-to-play games and all their baggage, so I'm mainly looking for "complete" ones.
F-Droid libre/free software/open source app store if it's an Android-based phone. https://f-droid.org/ Firefox for Android Disable all the Google stuff unless you absolutely need it. There are open-source alternatives that you can use to access GMail, for example. (I don't know of a good alternative to Google Maps) Also encrypt the phone storage. Don't use fingerprint/face ID.
Firefox for Android
Alternatively get Fennec (which is just a build of Firefox) from F-droid
Cultist Simulator is great fun and works well on the phone. Also Slay the Spire.
Emulators for the SNES, Gameboy Advance, Sega Genesis,
If you want to use an app store, I suggest some of the classic game remakes instead of free to play games.
If you like text based adventure games, Choice of Games has several options
Seed Ship is a cute little game about an AI piloted space ship carrying 1,000 colonists in search of a new world.
UnCiv is an open source version of Civ 5, if you want something very meaty.
The only game I have these days is Godville. It is text-based, zero bullshit, looks like it popped out of a 2009 time machine. It plays itself so you can just watch number go up and get that sweet dopamine from stupid puns with zero effort.
I'm genuinely asking here: what were the reasons for the delay (in getting a smartphone)?
My reasons for sticking to a classic cell for so long were cheapness, my preference for physical buttons over touchscreens, their smaller more compact size and their durability.
If we're being honest I'm kinda only upgrading now cuz they're gonna flat-out stop supporting my phone soon lol.

ah I see, that sucks. I'll be curious to hear how you like (or dislike) it after a few months.
Oh, I'm sure I'll love it probably, access to the internet (And all it entails) in your pocket, as well as all the different apps/games, is a HUGE thing.
Infinity Blade was really fun, thats really the only phone game I've ever seriously played. You can definitely load up most phones with a ton of emulators though and play your favorites! I think any modern phone can do stuff up to N64 without issue.
