only caveat: it is a minor example of the infamous Maxis/EA model of monetization where you could easily end up spending four or five times as much on dlc and cosmetic packs as you do for the base game

Kerbal Space Program: semi-realistic spaceflight simulation game where you build rockets. Very fun if you are interested in space, but there is a steep learning curve to overcome before you can access most of the game.

I just looked it up on steam and apparently it's on a 65% sale for the whole DLC bundle right now

Flight Simulators like FlightGear (free software) can scratch a similar itch. There's very little space flight¹, but a similarly steep learning curve which bears similarly rewarding fruit. There was a good thread of recommended flights about a month ago.

That said, FGFS has the most advanced Space Shuttle simulation outside of NASA (wiki / video), just in case you think KSP RP:1 is getting too easy for you. 😈 What it lacks is the ability to leave Earth orbit and visit celestial bodies. This is likely never coming. On the other hand, many of the flight dynamics models are based on real wind tunnel data, the atmospheric and meteorological model is very accurate, the gravitational and geographic models don't treat Earth as a sphere, etc.

east shade. Its morrowind but you paint and talk to aminals

toem. you take photos and talk to aminals and ghosts

carto. You put maps together, cute puzzler

garden of the sea. VR game, grow crops and solve puzzles. Super cozy vibe.

sable. botw with no combat. Ride a bike around different areas and solve problems for people. Its a vibe and pretty wholesome

later alligator. cute detective game, animation is cool

to the moon. story driven game about helping people near death's dreams come true. Its emotional

Cloudpunk. play a poor young woman moving to a future cyberpunk mega city and drive as a taxi driver, sometimes you get people asking you to do dodgy stuff.

spiritfarer i haven't actually played much of this one but it was pretty cool what little bit i did play.

a short hike its like a microcosm of botw mixed with animal crossing. Its a very short game but its cool, you climb and hike and talk to aminals.

eastshade studios announced their next game not too long ago i think. It's 2d, understandably i'm sure producing something like eastshade was an undertaking for what started as such a small team. I'm excited for it tho

my favorite bit of eastshade was the mystery in the hotel out on the island.

spiritfarer is one of my favorite indie games in years. Very very good. It's very easy for that game to make you cry imo

Came to this thread to recommend Sable. One of the best things I've experienced in years. Really good art and music. It's a game so relaxed there's no set plot. You're allowed to go out into the world and complete as many quests as you please. You're perfectly free to complete only one and then go back home. It's really charming.

so good! I couldn't put it down. Such a cool vibe and the visuals were so unique.

I really like the concept of people's coming of age ritual being to just take some time off to experience the world and see what their calling is in life. Unexpectedly really wholesome.

Surviving mars is a fun colony on mars game. There's one of the mysteries that involves the outbreak of a third world war but a) it can be removed when you start a new game and b) the war is seen as an absolutely terrible event that you're tasked with doing the very best you can to stop.
