while I acknowledge that Russia has transphobia as well, it is sus that this story is a confirmation of actively harmful policy in the Ukraine that discriminates against trans people and the writer subtitles their story with a focus on the danger posed by Russia
Well yeah it was interesting the line from the person from the Ukrainian LGBT organization was acting all confused because Ukrainian law suggests that their documents should be accepted at the border when it's like... Yeah are you really surprised? The urban inteligentsia has been ignoring this problem of reactionary elements within the Ukranian military and unchecked nazi militias operating in the east doing whatever the fuck they want. It doesn't really matter what the law says because the military/militias are in control now and if Zelenskiy started asking for something like this to stop he would get couped in a second.

Askhully it's good for LGBT people to let Nazi militias run rampant in their country 1/?

As we all know, countries in open warfare that are getting paved over are always well-organized and respectful of their minorities, particularly ones which face heavy discrimination. Especially so when the country in question has a lot of armed fashies out and about
"Human rights groups raise concerns that graves of LGBT people killed by Ukrainian military may be desecrated by the Russians"
“Technically, the law applies to trans people as well, including both certified trans men and trans women who had not changed their documents. But it sounds like Ukrainian border guards are preventing even trans people with a valid certificate reflecting their new gender from leaving Ukraine, and nobody knows why.”
Oh, I'm pretty sure we know fucking why :frothingfash: :frog-no-pretext:
danger posed by Russia’s transphobic policies
Honest question, is Russian transphobia going to be significantly more dangerous to Ukrainian trans people that Ukrainian transphobia? Obviously I understand people's desire to leave an active war zone regardless...
Depends on where you are in Ukraine but generally speaking outside of Kyiv it's not much better than Poland in those regards. Lots of trans people live in Kyiv and there has been pride marches more recently without state repression. In many parts of Ukraine like mauripol where azov operates it's way less safe to be trans compared to moscow
St Petersburg is surprisingly LGBT friendly also. I helped funnel money to get Russian LGBT people moved there for a while due to my translation skills
Also if things get worse there are orgs that can get people to Scandinavia there
Probably not. Transphobia in a warzone sounds like a bad concoction though
doubt it. but the writers and editors know that "Russia bad" will make the owners happy
Like I was thinking that maybe there some truth to it in a sense, that once military is in change of keeping order and organizing the necessities in the cities they've taken, it's not a good place to be as a visible minority.
Ukraine: does transphobia
Western Press: WTF why is Russia so transphobic
Doubt it. Ukraine had the highest rate of anti-LGBT hate crimes in post-Soviet nations before this invasion, I can’t imagine the situation improved with Nazis given Carte Blanche and roving criminal gangs set loose
You see in some parts of their countries orcs will kidnap trans children from their parents for giving them trans care.
it doesn't even make sense as a concern unless you assume that Russia's aim is to annex the entirety of Ukraine.
Should change title of post, the headline is biased. Outside of Kyiv and Lviv, trans people are not safe in Ukraine. Some trans women even conscripted for Ukraine military and forced to fight with men.
St. Petersburg or Moscow are similar, "safe" for trans people as Kyiv and Lviv (maybe less, but not very much).
The headline is technically correct but the sub line under it and the article make that implication. The trans people quoted in the article seem more concerned with getting the fuck out of the warzone then what the russians will do.
At this point the premise of that implication is fundamentally flawed to me because it's starting to look like either Ukraine will turn into a forever insurgency or Russia will wait until they have enough leverage and get a deal pushed through (Donbass, crimea agreement, neutrality status ect)
So this question "how will Russia treat lgbt people after the war" makes no sense to me unless I'm wrong and Russia somehow wins this war by total conquest
Edit: and let's not forget all the terf shit the guardian has allowed to be published. Talk about bad faith
i can't believe russia is preventing trans ukranians from leaving ukraine
Yes LGBT rights are amazing in Ukraine, and that’s why Russia is invading… to oppress trans people
