  • I asked this to OP elsewhere, but am curious to hear your perspective on DPR and LPR in light of the east/west divide and what the Ukrainian government did to them after maidan (you mentioned shelling but also economic damage)

It is a mess because both Russia and the United States have meddled so much. A number of socialist leaders in DPR and LPR were murdered or assassinated, so it is not as focused and more anti-fash nationalist. I think both still have a better chance as self-governing states than under the Ukrainian government.

I wish there was a good way to get perspective from those areas specifically, but good old YouTube banned a bunch of media outlets from DPr and LPR because Google is an ex-spook and state department hangout

Yes, the US government thinks both the DPR and LPR are terrorist organizations. They censor content from them on most platforms. Most english media is very biased against them because of this.

  • Do you think the East and west can be unified or will the Donbas ultimately need to be federated into Russia for Ukraine to be unified as a European nation?

In a perfect world, East and West would find solidarity somehow. We're not in that world and cannot be because of American imperialism. I think the DPR and LPR need to be independent countries or confederate together. I thought the Minsk Protocol could have worked, but it was just a broken promise.

The cultural split is difficult and has only gotten worst because of nationalists in both regions. Seeing all this has made me more of an anarchist. I don't have much hope for any large state.

  • I agree the Ukrainian government is being sold out by usa and has been for almost 10 years.

I think painting all ukraine as fash is extremely erroneous

I am not trying to paint all Ukrainians as fash, far from it. The illegitimate NATO government has enabled nationalists and fascists in its ranks. The people though are not any more fash than all Americans are fash (honestly less so, but I hope you understand). The east also has this problem.

it’s not sharp divide where western half can be claimed irredeemable.

Did not mean to seem that way. I love the west part of the country (I just wish it was socialist again). Most people there are good and I also have some family there. Some very good anarchist orgs too in Kyiv/Kiev.

Sorry if this was not clear. I am extremely critical of the Ukrainian government. If we could have a unified country without corruption or fascism, I would prefer it.

  • I understand, thank you for explaining. The war devastated Ukraine and eastern Europe, I am sorry your family were incarcerated in the nazi camps and I'm glad they made it out.

For anyone reading who doesn't know: The west of Ukraine was brutalized even more terribly by the Nazis. I've been to the concentration camps and the Lonskoho prison in Lvov, it is horrible.

Which is why I’m sickened by the Ukrainian government being overrun by neo Nazis at some of the highest levels. Not even two generations away from being enslaved by Nazi Germany.

I remember feeling hope that Euromaidan might change things for the better. That was idealist because I was very young, but to know those protests opened the door for neo-nazis to take power makes me want to puke. Yanukovych was corrupt, but at least he was internally corrupt.

I’m also not trying to justify any actions the Ukrainian govt. has down toward regions in the east and I’m sorry if it seemed that way. And thank you for pointing out the crimes the Ukrainian government has done toward the eastern regions.

Thank you for being so patient in your response. It's been an extremely stressful week and this site finding a sort of "neutral" space feels like it is one of the only places not licking imperialist boot.

  • It is extremely chauvinistic and I hope that is not what is happening here. If it is, this whole post has as much value as a gusano with opinions on Cuba. I try to be polite on these things, but speaking for Ukrainians when you have never been to Ukraine and have no immediate family there is arrogance.

Again, hopefully that is not happening. Ukraine is very divided right now, so it is possible they are just a westerner who does not speak Russian. That is okay! Some of my family only speaks Ukrainian.

A lot of the conflict comes from native Russian vs Ukrainian speakers. Both populations have lived in this area for generations. The Ukrainian government is extremely nationalist and has been attempting to do "Ukraine for Ukrainians". Lots of displacement, forced deportations, and the 8 years of shelling civilian targets in the east. It is not good.
