well what exactly does he do in this situation? he has no leverage. it's either play along or end your political career by telling people to fuck off and i guess bernie wants to continue being a senator.
Also, he's almost certainly aware of the fact that if he makes a wrong choice it will be another weapon wielded against the left. He doesn't want to start a war with the Democratic Party because it's not a war the left can win right now.
