Pls no ‘come and see’ or the type of horror that is really about filling you up with existential dread about the planet dying. I want slop.

Candyman, [REC] is a really good found footage movie, the original Texas chainsaw massacre is really good if you haven’t seen that, eden lake if you want a movie that’ll piss you off, bone tomahawk is a nice western horror although a bit problematic, the wailing is an insanely good Korean film but a bit of a slow burn
I've seen [REC], really good although I thought the scenes with the Chinese tenants felt kind of racist, but Spain :shrug-outta-hecks:

Will check out the original Texas Chainsaw and Eden lake. I tried the Wailing, couldn't get into it so I stopped like 25 mins in. Might give it a second try.
I forgot that it got a remake. The original is much better in my opinion, did not care for the remake
I stopped watching the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre once Franklin stopped being the focus all the other characters just weren't engaging
Us is good? Will check it out, didn't seem to recieve as much fanfare as Get out.
It's got some really great moments in it, but it's more esoteric than Get Out was

Which thinking about it, is probably exactly why it didn't get as much attention as Get Out did
it's class message is definitely more weird and esoteric than get outs race message as well I liked the movie but I could not tell you what the hell was going on in it
yeah get out was much more "in your face" and there were no winks and nudges, just hard shoves.
which honestly, is fine. I think the movie was good, and it definitely tore libs up a bit which is great.
US is absolutely much better and more nuanced and I hope that NOPE follows suit.
Can't go wrong with any John Carpenter horror pre- Village of the Damned. The Thing and Halloween are the best, The Thing has maybe the best effects of any horror movie ever made, and the whole apocalypse trilogy is great. (They're apocalyptic in that humanity could be destroyed by the events of the film, but it's because of monsters attacking or whatever, not climate change or really capitalism.) I haven't seen Someone's Watching Me yet, but the other ones I didn't mention are also pretty good. Apparently his episodes on Masters of Horror are also good.
If psychological stuff appeals to you and anime isn't a turnoff, check out Perfect Blue. It's a great example of how a committed director can make mediocre material great, and it's got some of the best violence ever animated.
They also made a mini documentary about making it that's a fun watch
My rec would be the original Halloween. It's the only John Carpenter film I've seen, but it's really good. I'm not a fan of slashers these days, I used to like them when I was younger but lately I've found them boring. For instance I saw the film X recently, about some people in the '70s who rent a small cabin on a farm to shoot interracial porn but outside of the big studio system, and then they all get killed. And it's a well made, well written movie. It's got lots of little twists on the classic slasher formula. But once you get right down to it, it was a slasher, nothing that special. I don't regret having watched it, but it's not going to leave a lasting impact on me. But Halloween, the first big slasher film, is just good all around. Even now, even having seen all the derivatives it spawned, the original holds up.
Ditto the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
But all I really wanted to say is that The Ritual is such a good movie. I happened to stumble across it on Netflix not knowing what it was, expecting something that would play in the background while I browsed Reddit. But it blew me away.
The Witch is probably my favorite horror film.

for me, they are two separate movies. IMO it's like 2 directors got the same basic idea (dance school is actually witches) and then ran in their own directions with it.

yeah, this probably is a fair disclaimer.
i watched ace ventura the other day for the first time, and was just taken aback by how ugly and mean spirited it is. becomes a very hard watch. i'd like to think sleepaway camp does allow some detachment, a distance between depiction and endorsement, but the film certainly might not be read that way.
ready or not is good it's not scary but it is fun
the shining post lockdown is fun to watch and heckle

There are so many great movies on this list, so I feel bad inundating more butttttt here are a few i hven't seen mentioned yet:
The Pink Cloud. a brasilian movie. not exactly horror, but definitely terrifying if Covid and isolation has freaked you out.
no one mentioned Silence of the Lambs which is definitely in the canon for a reason.
Coherence is more thriller but has some horror elements and is just a masterclass on short, simple story telling brining on huge ramifications.
Clovehitch Killer - if you were raised evangelical christian this is a good thriller for you
The Vigil - if you are jewish, or know anything about shiva, then this is for you
Splinter - low budget with great practical effects.
Raw and Titane - two french horror films by the same director. weird body shit, especially in the latter.
Misery - another classic. Kathy Bates is incredible in this.
also surprised no one said the Scream series. great meta slashers, and i'd argue one of the most consistent horror franchises to ever exist. even the 'worst' movies in the series are still decent to good imo.
Coherence is one of my favorite movies, period. Glad to see it mentioned.
yeah and reading up about it after the fact was really cool too.
basically, none of them were really major actors per se, and there was no dialogue/script. none of the actors knew eachother, just sorta "ideas" that they ran with. makes it more "real" but not toooo amateurish.
