Europe spent most of it's history engaged in bloody internecine warfare that drove the worldwide development of military technology for almost five hundred years. When people hate themselves that much it's not much wonder they hate everyone else, too.
Italy tried, and failed, to conquer Ethiopia because the fash thought they had to conquer a chunk of Africa to be a real European power. I doubt their depictions of Ethiopians in propaganda were very flattering.
