The political parties are mostly formed around positions regarding the statehood/independence/status quo question though. If they were to become a state, politicians of both parties would lose their positions and have to join Dems or Republicans which is why a lot of the politicians and business folks that "support" statehood publicly are against it privately and never want it to actually happen.

That's a good point. I still think it would lean more Democratic. They would probably vote similarly to Mexican Americans.
