My former best friend refused to say a damn thing when my fiancee dumped me and my mom nearly died in the same week. When I called them out on it, they said they didn't owe me the emotional labor.

Relationships, of all kinds, are living things. They need to be tended to, or else they turn sour.

What saddens me most is that they used to be aware of this shit. They were among the most influential people in pushing me to the left and now they got a serious case of :brainworms:

Shortly beforehand they speculated to me about a mutual friend of ours being a tankie because he was insufficiently critical of China.

This seems like a kinda toxic way of looking at it. That they eventually became a shithead doesn't invalidate the times that were good.

I suppose that's one way of looking at it. The other way was that the relationship was always performative and extractive and only existed when it benefitted the asshat.

Can't say either way without having been there, but if any of my friends shut me out of sympathy at my lowest time, I'd consider them a pretender.

I suppose you're right in some regards. It certainly became that way towards the end. If it was truly performative from the beginning, they managed to fool a lot of very perceptive people.

That wa so crazy. Like damn, I'm shocked that teenagers who had a rough life don't have perfect control of their emotions.

Another good (?) one was the psychologist complaining about patients "trauma dumping"

Psychiatrists* are for giving you 'back to work' drugs and nothing more

Psychologists are for passive listening for rich people without friends

Honestly that is something hard about being a therapist. I get the "it's your job" argument, but lots of us have jobs these days where you have to put in way more hours than you're comfortable with just to make rent. I'm pretty sure the specific psych was just a PoS but I can see scenarios where it genuinely just sucks.

This one was just a psychologist smugly mentioning that patients would "traump dump" on the first session

That's a good way to make thousands of people even more insecure about seeking help

If you've managed to make it this far without watching this show, maybe give it a try. I was pleasantly surprised

Whatever happened to Gary Cooper? The strong, silent type?
