          Idealists don’t believe in magic. They know their fictions won’t stop missiles, but they know if they convince the western populations of the ideas of how dastardly and evil those missiles are and that justice must prevail over the evil enemies then you can pull the nation into a suicidal lose-lose war that no realist or materialist would have considered

            more people believe in magic than you'd think. And lots of modern notions rest squarely on magical thinking. just because they don't believe in cackling witches and wizards doesn't mean people don't believe in magic.

            for example the belief that by skilful legal counsel or prosecution someone can become innocent or guilty is a magical notion. As is the belief that the printer will jam because you have an important job to do
