I mean...I don't think you even need to have a liberation theology lens to come to the conclusion to be fair.
All he is really saying is war is bad, and this war has been caused because international actors have deemed to make Ukraine a battleground for competing interests and that it should stop and be sorted diplomatically.
It doesn't strike me as all that unorthodox or radical.
Although I do think coming from a continent that has been torn apart by civil wars caused by the US and it's allies/puppets does give him a different perspective on the matter.
My extended family is a bunch of devout catholics and its been really interesting seeing how they reconcile Pope Francis, the actual teachings of the Catechism about the less fortunate, and the worn out "christianity" of the United States that gets peddled by reactionaries. One of the big struggle points was the border issue where a bunch of nominally catholic or culturally catholic migrants/immigrants/refugees get treated like shit by the reactionary USA gov't and they have to sit and admit they voted for this. No shield left to hide behind except the racism, I guess, sorry it got uncomfortable Uncle Ron.
Oh absolutely, closer to in terms of the church as a whole.
And yes, being an Argentinian whose family fled fascist govts in Europe I imagine gives him a fairly clear insight into the US, war in general etc.
