T minus 4 days until a major media outlet, probably a br*tish one, calls the Pope of the Catholic Church a tankie

I mean the Catholic church in many ways sucks, but it is nice to see a Latin American Pope siding more towards liberation theology.

If you look his wiki page up, under controversies he really is pissing off a lot of the right people.

I mean...I don't think you even need to have a liberation theology lens to come to the conclusion to be fair.
All he is really saying is war is bad, and this war has been caused because international actors have deemed to make Ukraine a battleground for competing interests and that it should stop and be sorted diplomatically.
It doesn't strike me as all that unorthodox or radical.

Although I do think coming from a continent that has been torn apart by civil wars caused by the US and it's allies/puppets does give him a different perspective on the matter.

My extended family is a bunch of devout catholics and its been really interesting seeing how they reconcile Pope Francis, the actual teachings of the Catechism about the less fortunate, and the worn out "christianity" of the United States that gets peddled by reactionaries. One of the big struggle points was the border issue where a bunch of nominally catholic or culturally catholic migrants/immigrants/refugees get treated like shit by the reactionary USA gov't and they have to sit and admit they voted for this. No shield left to hide behind except the racism, I guess, sorry it got uncomfortable Uncle Ron.

Oh absolutely, closer to in terms of the church as a whole.

And yes, being an Argentinian whose family fled fascist govts in Europe I imagine gives him a fairly clear insight into the US, war in general etc.

And the crazy thing is, this is the time it has been CLOSEST to the hand of god at play. All the folks who voted for him did so explicitly to throw away their vote and see who other people would vote for that round. He's an entirely accidental pope!

When you don't like the current Pope, it's the result of an elite crony in-group subverting God's will.

When you do like the Pope, it's because God's will will always overcome even the most corrupt hearts.

I think at this point a pope that praises China and calls out NATO expansionism is more helpful to the cause than damaging. Dollars to Doughnuts the next pose will be worse.

idk... this pope has probably done more praxis than any of us in terms of his dedication to helping the poor, even if the institution of the papacy is inherently problematic.

there's a reason American catholics have basically been pretending this guy doesn't exist.
