Trabant

Trabant is a series of small cars produced from 1957 to 1991 by former East German car manufacturer VEB Sachsenring Automobilwerke Zwickau. In total, four different models were made, the Trabant 500, Trabant 600, Trabant 601, and the Trabant 1.1. The first Trabant model, the Trabant 500, was a modern car when it was introduced in 1957.

James May of BBC's Top Gear did a Cars of the People miniseries that covers lots of cool mass produced cars, Trabant included. As a BBC series, it is rife with anticommunism, but the content about the trabi was still very interesting. I had no idea their body was made of Duroplast (a mixture of wool/cotton reinforced plastic similar to Bakelite)

I'm hopeless when it comes to understanding mechanical stuff but I was watching a docuseries and they discussed engines and I realized it wouldn't break my brain to at least have a bit better than ELI5 understanding of 2 stroke engines etc. I had no idea cars could be 2 stroke until last night. And... well, I had a lot of misconceptions about engines.

      Also...

I had no idea their body was made of Duroplast (a mixture of wool/cotton reinforced plastic similar to Bakelite)

I just knew the car was going to be very funky.
