many communist parties have join and supported the protests
there's 3 main communist parties: Communist Party of Sri Lanka who are like a normal ML party, Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna who are a more reformist party like the one in kerala and were the ones who fought in the civil war, and the Ceylon Communist Party who are a maoist party who are allies with the naxalites and the nepal maoists
also theres a bunch of trot splinters
Which communist party does the Sri Lankan president belong to?
His current party is called Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna. They're economically social democrats, and socially right wing.
Yeah I'm honestly worried this is possibly a coup or a co-opted coup from legitimate worker concerns that will eventually be suppressed with a fash takeover. Here's hoping it's not
Yeah it could be a coup or could be just western media trying to drum up "communist country bad" news even though the leadership are not communist and there's contention between the main socialist party and the liberal new democratic front party.
So, Sri Lanka has not been in any way socialist since the 80s. They were one of the first countries to accept IMF "structural adjustment programmes".
fomenting worldfire hours. i just wanna know how the banks, churches, and prisons are doing :back-to-me-shining:
recent news that mentioned the commies:
May 09, Colombo: Former President Maithripala Sirisena, the Chairman of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), has said that the present government has committed the most foolish act in recent history by aiding and abetting a mob attack on peaceful protesters in front of Galle Face Green and Temple Trees.
The former President said the country would suffer the consequences of the government’s action both locally and internationally, adding that this was an act that should not be done by a government.
Former President Maithripala Sirisena made this statement addressing a media briefing held today (9) at the office of the Communist Party of Sri Lanka by independent groups of parliamentarians.
The former President said that the attack on innocent people carried out by the ruling party supporters with the backing of the government was a heinous act and condemned it with contempt.
The former President said in the aftermath of the attack, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa will also have to soon step down as the Prime Minister.
MP Udaya Gammanpila, the Leader of the Pivithuru Hela Urumaya (JHU) said since according to the criminal law, all those who aided and abetted a crime should be arrested and all those who supported the attack on peaceful protesters should be arrested for complicity in the crime. Without doing so, the government will not be able to bring peace and tranquility to the people, he said.
MP Gammanpila said the failure of the police to stop Mahinda Rajapaksa’s supporters from reaching the peaceful protest site at Galle Face and to call in the security forces for the safety of the peaceful protesters while a state of emergency was in effect was a big question.
Strongly denouncing the State Terrorism which brutally attacked the peaceful protestors, MP Gammanpila said this kind of oppression would further strengthen People’s Struggle.
Parliamentarian Anura Priyadarshana Yapa said that this incident was a black mark in the history of Sri Lanka and that the President, the just resigned Prime Minister and all members of the government should take responsibility and leave. He added that they have committed an offense before the law
Leader of the National Freedom Front Wimal Weerawansa, Secretary General of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, Dayasiri Jayasekara, Member of Parliament Weerasumana Weerasinghe, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Sri Lanka, Dr. G. Weerasinghe also addressed the gathering.
The only problem with Sri Lanka is that every party involved is neoliberal. I don't see the people of Sri Lanka getting any sort of good deal in the near future. Very bleak times.
