Buddy of mine is exactly like this. They each have like a personal account that they can use to buy whatever they want. The idea of consulting his wife before making a large purchase for himself with that money was appalling to him.

I think it's exactly as you describe. Never lose the autonomy over yourself. It's a terrible relationship model imo
