One warning. Just because the megathread lists a website as safe for software does not mean it still is. Things can change rapidly. I wouldn't touch the piratebay except for old video content that you can't find elsewhere, it's full of malware among even trusted users in the software section.
You can search directly from qbittorrent for torrents once you install searchers. You can also install something like jacket to further enhance these search capabilities. qBittorrent also allows you to bind your network interface in advanced settings to your VPN network interface. Do this to avoid leaks.
