Resources For Understanding The War Beyond The Bulletins

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map, who is an independent youtuber with a mostly neutral viewpoint.

Moon of Alabama, which tends to have good analysis (though also a couple bad takes here and there)

Understanding War and the Saker: neo-conservative sources but their reporting of the war (so far) seems to line up with reality better than most liberal sources.

Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict and, unlike most western analysts, has some degree of understanding on how war works. He is a reactionary, however.

On the ground: Patrick Lancaster, an independent journalist reporting in the Ukrainian warzones.

Unedited videos of Russian/Ukrainian press conferences and speeches.

probably not as bad as other countries, Finland gets a relatively small fraction of their energy from gas IIRC, and a relatively small fraction of their gas from Russia. so the main thing it would probably impact would be industries that need gas, which idk if they have any.

As far as I know, right now there's no official statement that gas is being cut. It comes from a Finnish newspaper which said Russia threatened this, and then other Finnish and non-Finnish media circulated this. Of course, it was given the implication that 1) gas is being cut and 2) it's because Finland is joining NATO.

However the same newspaper Iltalehti posted this article later. But later in the article it is mentioned that Finland doesn't want to pay gas in rubles when the next payment date comes. (I actually thought they already acquiesced.)

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov called Iltalehti 's coverage of Russia's possible gas tap shutdowns "another newspaper scam," The Guardian reported .

According to information received by Iltalehti, politicians had been warned that Russia might stop distributing natural gas to Finland as soon as today, Friday. However, Peskov said there are no such plans to date and assured that the Russian oil and gas group Gazprom is a reliable supplier of natural gas.

Preparations have been made for the closure of gas taps in Finland due to the prevailing climate. Both NATO's application for membership and Gazprom's demands to pay bills in Russian rubles are causing friction between Russia and Finland. Russia has already cut off gas exports to Poland and Bulgaria, which refused to pay gas bills in rubles.

The same situation may arise in Finland when the time for the next gas bill comes. Helsinki News has previously reported that Minister for Europe and Corporate Governance Tytti Tuppurainen has said that Finland does not intend to agree to ruble payments.

I wonder if these articles about gas cut-off and NATO membership are so that Finnish people can be primed to blame Russia when Finnish politicians choose not to buy gas in rubles. Don't pay for gas, don't get gas, it's the rules to capitalism. 🤷‍♂️

Separately, a Russian electric company cut electricity exports to Finland citing problems with payment due to sanctions. Finnish media thinks the timing is suspect.
