    Most Americans have either weird idiosyncratic views or none at all, so they default to the parties to be ideological crutches. They're also often bound by specific personalities rather than coherent ideologies. Better questions would be asking approval of policies existing outside the framework of the parties entirely, like asking about workplace control or even like directly asking people if they identify as racist.
