This is my band, we play heavy atmospheric Lovecraftian doom metal. We're going on our first tour in August!

What is it about music spaces that are so difficult on the internet exactly? What is it about music that is just hard to talk about on a board?

/Mu was fun back in the day before it got racist, because it was mostly a file sharing board. I had hard drives full of stuff, mostly unknown and totally lost to time now. Then with streaming that got less attractive, and it got super racist so there's that.

Reddit has a few boards but a lot of them are bad. Self promotion on boards never work because if it's a spot for self promotion no one listens to anything and everyone just posts there own stuff. The main Reddit music board is of course a blight, it's just weird chud music city.

There's a sweet spot where the board has to be big enough that you don't have no taste overlap between users, but also small enough that there's actual discussion and not just people supporting the music that's already popular. Indieheads on reddit used to be pretty good about that years ago, but it was made a default sub and now it's pretty useless for finding or talking about music.

Is there actually a coherent explanation for the differences between heavy psych, psychedelic rock, acid rock, and space rock?

I feel like if I could filter out a list of all psych rock releases with notes of experimental rock (and no notes of progressive rock) it’d be perfect

Anyone listening to Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers? CW: on that bad boy, lots of use of transphobic/misogynistic language, discussion of sexual assault and violence, inter-familial violence, etc.

My (cishet white male) comrade friends (also cishet white guys) and I have been thinking about the album since it came out. Personally, I think he wrote that song to express to transphobes (possibly it's particular expression in parts of the black community where perhaps the f slur is more common than the circles I'm personally in?) that trans people are people by contrasting his prior dehumanization of them in deadnaming, misgendering, dropping the f slur, and not truly thinking of them as their actual (not birth) gender. I'm pretty sure he became a Christian in the last few years, which I think explains the particular importance of choosing his trans family members over organized religion. Idk. I wanted to talk about the album because I like what I think he's doing, trying to humanize people in an age where dehumanization is always easier to communicate, but my friends and I might also be reading too much of our own abolitionist perspectives into this rather complex, deeply personal work. I don't think he's trying to be transphobic or homophobic, but it's also not music I would play around people that might be hurt by it, y'know? Just like I'm not going to bump We Cry Together at a stoplight.

Been a pretty big fan of Beck over the years, and really dig this track with the contrasting parts of dissonance and harmony. Really have no clue what the lyrics are supposed to mean, like most Beck lyrics. It does seem to maybe allude to extraordinary rendition if you squint at it.

Beck was doing some really cool shit in his music before. His last few albums have been pretty tame though I wish he would go back to that sound, the Guero/Odelay stuff or even his early folk punky shit

ya, I miss the punky shit from Mellow Gold and earlier, like this could be an antiwork theme-song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PTZd8dq2iGI

I think he got into the whole pop thing, and it sanded off all the more interesting characteristics that he used to be known for, hopefully he goes through another experimental reinvention again

for me i don't give any playtime to the first two records. too cheesy. but Shut Your Mouth, All Hallows, and Black Sails are fantastic albums. Art of Drowning has plenty of good tracks but is kind of a breaking point for me to where Sing The Sorrow goes near-mainstream

Oh right, that's what I meant too, I kind of forgot the very first two albums. I love the all hallows EP, that is a solid collection of 4 songs. It's really changed how I play guitar recently too, fun stuff.

Is Irish punk actually Irish? Or just "Irish" Americans and for some reason Germans (Fiddler's Green are German) larping?

Went down a rabbit hole with a Sony NWA55 with custom firmware and Chi-fi IEMs.

Rediscovered some of my youth thru Latterman - Turn up the Punk, We'll Be Singing.

I love anything by Manic Hispanic (rip Gabby) but my fav is probably Cruise, their take on NOFX The Brews.

I loathe classic rock, and the horse with no name song is unbearable. I used to work construction and the boss played the classic rock station all day, every day.

I don't really follow contemporary stuff, but when I listen to music I put on a nearby college station that is awesome. They play a ton of indy and hip hop but they have a blues show, a polka show, and a video game music show that is great. KSPC for anyone interested.

Edit: Is Joan Jett considered classic rock? The Blackhearts have some bangers. That lick on I Love Rock n Roll is iconic, as is her "ow" but Crimson and Clover and Do You Want to Touch Me are great. Didn't know until recently she produced records for L7 and Bikini Kill. Woman is hard as fuck.

I've pretty much been listening to Bloc Party non-stop since their new album came out. I highly recommend them for great indie rock

Helicopter is the song that first got them pretty huge off their first album. It's a classic

You Should Know the Truth is one of the highlights from the new album

Dr Dog is my favorite band. You should check them out. Their best album is Be The Void but I think everything they’ve ever put out has had at least a few great tracks
