This is wrong. In the early 2000s Americas assumed that every Muslim was secretly planning to kill America. The fbi kept entrapping dumb teens to provide fuel for this fire.

America also was busy linking everything together so that disliking the Israel occupation of Palestinian territory was the same thing as trying to kill America.

    Also the flag pins.

Seriously, I don't ever want to hear someone whine about wearing a mask again when 20 years ago it was a national outrage to be in public without a damn flag lapel.

I'm convinced that the hard pro-Israel turn that US evangelicals made after 9/11 is based on racist hatred of brown Muslim people. That, and a lot of money spent by Sheldon Adelson and co.

I mean, evangelicals had also been sorta pro Israel, but as someone who lived in that world pre-9/11, it wasn't anything close to what it is now IMO.

A huge part of it is that Evangelicals believe when all the Jews return to Jerusalem it will trigger their weird version of the Apocalypse. They don't care about Jewish people or Israel, they're just the means to an end. Literally the end of the world, in this case.

As red scare was more about ideology and secret ideology.

This is currently anyone suggesting Russians aren’t subhuman are in fact also sub-human by proxy.

Americans in the early 2000s were all on board for firing missiles at every individual Muslim person

I wonder if the only thing that prevented actual pogroms in fact was that there were so few Arabs and Muslim people in the US at the time. I can never get a grasp on how bloodthirsty America is at any given moment.

I don't think your average person realizes how manufactured the red scare was, they just think of it as the public going a lil bit overboard hence the name "scare".

Its taught as McCarthy just being a wacky individual who wanted more power and could talk well, rather than being a well organized, tactical media and education campaign, coordinated by nearly all levels of government

He's also portrayed as being unintentionally right, even if he was a crank and just making things up. I learned in school that there actually were a bunch of communists in the government and that was definitely a bad thing, even if the reasons are vague and unspecified.

I think this was more cointelpro rather than HUAC, but those are similar in a sense. The reason that French New Wave star Jean Seberg was targeted by Edgar Hoover initially was that she donated like $500 to civil rights orgs. They discovered later she also donated to the black panthers, but like who cares, you don't have to be like a soviet agent to support them, and you only found that out after stalking a private citizen for donating to mainstream civil rights places. You also know that the reason she was on their radar at all is that they probably considered French New Wave to be secretly soviet or some shit.

I don't think the details matter, the point is that we need a never ending red scarce to protect our American way of false scarcity and poverty.

Hoover was such a fucking monster. Everyone goes on about the Stasi like we didn't have our own corrupt and totally unaccountable networks of spies and assassins at home.

The man who negotiated the Bretton Woods Agreement, Harry Dexter White, was a spy for the USSR.

The Manhattan Project was also riddled with spies.

Americans: the red scare was just a few silly over-the-top reactions to the Soviets

Also Americans: Communism killed 100 billion people which is why we can't have communism and also why other countries like Vietnam can't have communism and why the US was justified in killing millions just to try and stop communism. And no, I will not look into where that number came from or consider that it also was part of the propaganda. I'm definitely correct about this despite the fact I don't actually know shit about what I'm talking about.

people forget the western allies propping up the third reich early on, using them as a proxy against the USSR.

people forget the corporate coup attempt against FDR

people forget the palmer raids from 1919

they also forget the rage at the paris commune among the american bourgeoisie back in 1871. American anti communism is much, MUCH older than McCarthy.

The Man from Earth is a science fiction story where a group of people get together for a dinner party and one of them claims to have been alive for all of human history, thousands and thousands of years. At first the other guests don't believe him but as he describes various historical events as though he was there they start to wonder.

There is no reason to daydream that the PRC is going to look anything like the USSR did. CPC has different objectives that are concerned exclusively with China, not with anyone else. Xi is not trying to be a liberator.

there is no reason to think china is looking to expand socialism for any reason

True, but have you considered that as the rest of the world, especially the 3rd world, looks on, that China's success is its own propaganda?

stalin shouldn’t have stopped at berlin

Unfortunately the USSR had to stop at Berlin. They sacrificed 20-25 million people to fighting fascism. Lost 2/3 of their industrial capacity. The war very nearly destroyed them. America meanwhile paid german industrialists reparations. and built up West Germany through the Marshall Plan and the creation of NATO (which predates the Warsaw pact). The USSR was in no position to "go past Berlin" when America had nuclear weapons and the USSR would not for a few more years. The bomb was used on Nagasaki and Hiroshima not because it was needed to defeat Japan, but because it was a message for Stalin. Moscow would be rubble if he tried anything.
