wow this new test for the unreal engine looks good, can't wait for Sega to develop a new sonic game :agony:
if it feels good to play i think i will give it a shot like the thing about being a sonic fan is that if you've played that dogshit medieval sonic game on the wii sega CAN'T HURT ANYMORE THEIR KNIVES ARE TOO DULL TO GET THROUGH MY SKIN
i kinda hate it, i do enjoy the fact that it is king arthur but sonic but i remember getting it being really excited and then getting really bumbed by it
idk once you realize it's a on rails wii motion game I think it's pretty good for what your gonna get. huge improvement from Secret Rings.
edit: also Sonic has A SWORD!
yeah it's one of my favorite sonic intros
honestly sonic is characterized so well in this gameSonic gets isekai'd with 2 chili dogs falls to the ground and his first thoughts are "GOTTA SAVE THOSE" cheff's kiss
:no-copyright: damn straight! half of Sonic's fanbase is fucking impossible to please. I think it's because there's huge differences in expectations between different sections of it.
It often feels like there are two groups of people who either really like the 2D games or the 3D ones and pretty much since Generations they have been trying to please both to not great success.
But with Mania and now especially Origins it seems like there are stuff specifically catering to that camp, so I hope Frontiers captures what I think gives the 3D games their charm again.
You could get a team of, like, five enthusiasts together and they could give you something substantially more interesting in like six months.
It's called Sonic Mania
I remember Sonic Generations looking gorgeous when I watched a review of it.
Unleashed, Colors and Generations all figured out how to do 3D Sonic and make it good.
Project 06! it's surprisingly playable, but it doesn't fix any of the core problems of 06's design.
There's never a consistent throughline to the levels' challenges. In Mario for example you'll jump over a pit, then jump over a pit while avoiding an enemy, then jump over a pit while landing on a tiny platform - Sonic 06's levels don't do anything like that. The geometry of the track Sonic has to run on feels like it was designed at random, and the challenges are almost all a complete flatline. The major thing impeding your progress always feels like bullshit, and when you take away the buggy bullshit of the original release you're left with the bullshit of how ever single level has a section where you suddenly get up to a high speed while flanked on either side by instant death pits. This is all issues with the level design, and as long as P06 is committed to recreating the game and not remaking it, it will continue to inherit those problems.
Even in Project 06 I get to the end of every level not really feeling like I beat it, but like it finally ended. It's hard to quantify that feeling but I don't have it in, say, Sonic Adventure, Heroes, Colors, Generations, or even Forces (which imo isn't terrible so much as it is painfully mediocre).
They have to do this shitty, drab realistic style with absurd amounts of visible pop-in because then they can just let unreal engine auto-generate most of the map and handle the mechanics of loading assets/optimization. If it had the bright, colorful Sega art style of the 2D Sonics or those '90s Sega arcade games I could see it maybe working (still would need a mechanic that justifies it being open world).

This is true for literally every IP every time and I'll never stop thinking this. Even cynically, why not have the power plant section, the arcade section, the city escape section, and the super sonic section? You don't do anything new, you just have a thin veneer of plot to excuse bright colors and nostalgia on screen.
If Kirby just seamlessly transitioned into a fully 3D platformer, what's Sonics' excuse?
I'm guessing it's rushed development and shitty management by Sega
mismanagement by Sega is the recurring story of the franchise, but overall the series has as many good games as it does bad ones and it's bad reputation is just a meme.
Yeah that's true. I'm being harsh. I feel like the whole industry could benefit from slowing the fuck down though
Who the fuck thought open world would be an appropriate format for sonic lol
I think Sonic would benefit from a "hub world -> individual levels" design like Spyro used. And Ratchet and Clank 3 for that matter.
but also having a whole fucking lot of space to run around in with your sonic speed is cool
Because Studio executives saw that open world games are popular and saw dollar signs and then told the poor dev team to figure it out
Like I said I'm ready with the :ban-hammer: so keep aware gamers :disgost:
apparently they are releasing alot of info this month, so I would wait and see still
Forces? Do you mean Frontier?
Personally I thought the gameplay teaser was pretty promising.
The environment looks exactly like Breath of the Wild lol
Also Sonic's animations look weirdly stiff.
