Maybe. Like according to Marx the reason for the unceasing accumulation of capital is the contradiction between it's quality (unlimited social power) and it's quantity (which is limited). Maybe ugliness reduces their social power to the point that they search for money as a way to cope, leading them to begin the accumulation process, turning themselves into capitalists.
