    Also: a lot of these mythical Cherokee ancestors were likely black. Under Jim Crow anyone with any black ancestor could legally be considered black, so passably white people with black ancestry usually tried to downplay their heritage and instead explained their complexion with native ancestry. Definitely not the case always, but at least in the south was not uncommon
