Churchill is an absolute blowhard who by honest evaluation of his career is an incompetent trash, UK in WW2 was legitimately useless and only have its position in the current public consciousness because of the effort of their nationalists overblowing their contribution.

Dunkirk was a disaster that lead to the fall of France because the Brits retreating there leave a massive gap allows the Germans to blitz Paris, they bombed the French fleet that would've defected anyway and serves only to legitimize the Vichy, the defense of their Southeast Asian colony was a disaster, Dieppe raid is basically Gallipoli 2, the African front is an irrelevant sideshow overblown by western media, Market Garden is a blunder that is also whitewashed by the media, and the RAF strategic bombing campaign is a self-admitted act of mass murder against civilians that objectively have no effect on Germany's war capability.

And of course his genocide of India. Seriously, fuck Churchill. He would've allied with the Nazis if he could.

The Germans were doing it, and that they were doing it in Europe instead of Africa and Asia like the British themselves

          CW: Colonial violence

"First we must study how colonization works to decivilize the colonizer, to brutalize him in the true sense of the word, to degrade him, to awaken him to buried instincts, to covetousness, violence, race hatred, and moral relativism; and we must show that each time a head is cut off or an eye put out in Vietnam and in France they accept the fact, each time a little girl is raped and in France they accept the fact, each time a Madagascan is tortured and in France they accept the fact, civilization acquires another dead weight, a universal regression takes place, a gangrene sets in, a center of infection begins to spread; and that at the end of all these treaties that have been violated, all these lies that have been propagated, all these punitive expeditions that have been tolerated, all these prisoners who have been tied up and interrogated, all these patriots who have been tortured, at the end of all the racial pride that has been encouraged, all the boastfulness that has been displayed, a poison has been instilled into the veins of Europe and, slowly but surely, the continent proceeds toward savagery.

"And then one fine day the bourgeoisie is awakened by a terrific reverse shock: the gestapos are busy, the prisons fill up, the torturers around the racks invent, refine, discuss.

"People are surprised, they become indignant. They say: 'How strange! But never mind — it’s Nazism, it will pass!' And they wait, and they hope; and they hide the truth from themselves, that it is barbarism, but the supreme barbarism, the crowning barbarism that sums up all the daily barbarisms; that it is Nazism, yes, but that before they were its victims, they were its accomplices; that they tolerated that Nazism before it was inflicted on them, that they absolved it, shut their eyes to it, legitimized it, because, until then, it had been applied only to non-European peoples; that they have cultivated that Nazism, that they are responsible for it, and that before engulfing the whole of Western, Christian civilization in its reddened waters, it oozes, seeps, and trickles from every crack."

The British Empire had more industrial capacity than both the US and USSR combined, yet its productive output fell short of either, all because Churchill wanted to protect the sanctity of le market, even as London was getting pummeled.

It’s why I find it funny how right wingers seem to have a hateboner for FDR for doing the opposite. If he had the same approach as Churchill, war would have ended later, with the US being unable to take advantage of post-war Europe as quickly as it did (assuming the Soviets don’t take Paris).

I mean what is even funnier is that the right's greatest allies, billionaires like the Koch's, wouldn't exist without the shoveling of money the government did to the private sector as a part of centralizing WWII oil production.

The British didn’t expect a night attack to happen since they thought Japanese eyes wouldn’t see effectively at night :lmayo:

Imperial Japan belongs in the ash heap of history and I won’t hand it to them but I do find it funny how they one-upped the Anglos after being underestimated because of racism. There’s a reason American propaganda towards Japan was especially vicious and racist.

And he never forgave Cunningham for refusing to sink the French fleet. ABC was the better man and better leader and Churchill could do nothing about it, it infuriated him

the historiography around operation catapult is fucking hilarious actually, 'it demonstrated the british willingness to keep fighting to the americans' fucking LOL. churchill wanted sommerville replaced bc he wasnt as bloodthirsty as well and had objections about blasting the french. everything libs accuse stalin of doing as a military leader (interfering with command staff, trying to sack competent officers for stupid reasons) churchill did.

He also allegedly wanted to get my other beloved boy of the Royal Navy, Captain Leach court martialed for refusing to needlessly kill his men during the Battle of the Denmark Straits. The Mighty Hood fucking explodes, Bismark and Prinz Eugen are bearing down on him, of course he lived to fight another day and joined reinforcements he knew would be on their way so he could give chase in numbers. Pound for sure wanted him axed and Churchill anecdotally was at the very least livid. Tovey claims he threated to flat out resign as First Sealord if they tried that and would submit himself as character witness. Maybe he was mistaken in his memory, but it is certain Churchill wanted needless deaths there, telling Tovey to keep HMS King George V in battle "Bismarck must be sunk at all costs ... even if it ... means towing King George V". when she was low on fuel and exposed to possible U-Boats. Tovey says he would have disobeyed and been court martialed if ordered to follow through with that BS.

Churchill was a menace and just about everyone who worked with him loathed him

I don't think he would have ever allied with the Nazis but not because they were fascist, just because they were German and he saw them through the lens of inter-inperialist conflict a la WW1, those dirty Germans were setting out to steal UKs place as top imperialist dog.
