So I've been in Mexico City for the past week and a bit and holy fuck is it nice to be out of the States for a while, especially right now. Was at a massive pride event last weekend and the mood was so festive. There was a massive parade in the pedestrianized historic centre and then this enormous concert in the main square with thousands of people all so joyous (Mexico City has had same sex marraige since 2009, and on-request abortion since 2007 which was decriminalised nationwide in 2021) and it was just such a contrast with how my friends and I are feeling back in the US.

Talking with locals is nice. Obviously Mexico has massive problems just like anywhere else in the world, a lot of them caused or "helped" by American imperialism, but there isn't this massive psycho-spatial cloud of impending doom and collapse over everybody, and there's a level of social trust that is almost unthinkable back in the States. I've watched so many people pick other people up from the side of the road and then drop them where they were going, an action that is illegal in many states in the US and totally beyond the pale. The food is beyond delicious and very cheap. Going back to New York this weekend and very much don't want to, but I miss my kitties so that'll be nice.

Yeah I know basic enough Spanish to know when somebody is like "hey do you want a drink" or "please move" or "good evening" but outside that I'm totally lost. Honestly it's fine, I've done much crazier traveling with much less language skills so I've learned to be able to express myself with hand motions and Google Translate a lot. A lot of younger folk also speak very good English, so it's not as difficult as you imagine. More than once I've had a random kid help me with what I was trying to convey because they speak English (and people are helpful here!). You should be totally fine, definitely do it!!!
